From the Start,
Leading the Way
Since 2008, we’ve grown our reach, deepened our
expertise and led the way in news literacy education.
Expanded to Houston with a pilot classroom program.
2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR
Launched the Checkology virtual classroom, an
e-learning platform, making news literacy education
available nationwide.
Here’s how we got there:
Published the 昀椀rst issue of The Sift, a weekly newsletter
that uses recent examples of misinformation to create
classroom resources and teachable moments.

Founded with a $250,000 grant from the
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR

response to the COVID-19 pandemic, making the
platform free to all educators, students and families.
2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR
The Chronicle of Philanthropy featured NLP as an
example of a nonpro昀椀t that survived and thrived
despite launching during the 2008 recession.

Launched a podcast, Is that a
fact?, with an inaugural 10-episode
season featuring informative
conversations with experts working
to combat misinformation.
Debuted National News Literacy Week,
a campaign that de昀椀ned news literacy
and its importance for educators,
students and the public and gave them
tools to separate fact from 昀椀ction.
