District Fellowship Program
The News Literacy District Fellowship program
supports education leaders in designing and
implementing innovative district-wide plans for
integrating news and media literacy instruction.
Throughout the three-year fellowships, NLP provides
districts with professional learning, curriculum
guidance and access to a network of peers.
The program includes 17 districts in 13 states,
potentially impacting more than 1 million students.

Fellowship opportunity
Each year, we select a new cohort of district fellows
from around the country to reimagine news literacy
instruction in their districts, creating a positive
and lasting impact in their school communities.
During the 昀椀rst year of the program, fellows work
with NLP to design an action plan for executing
news literacy programs in their district. During the
second year, fellows pilot the plans. During the third
year, they continue implementation and expand
their impact. Applications open each spring.
News Literacy District
Fellowship Alumni Program
At the end of this three-year commitment, alumni
districts are encouraged to apply to remain
engaged to promote the continuous improvement,
implementation and growth of this initiative and
support the education leaders who follow them.
NLP Model Districts
Districts that complete our fellowships may apply
to serve as Model Districts, demonstrating their
continued commitment to widespread adoption
of news literacy education. These are centers
of leadership and educational excellence that
demonstrate our vision for news literacy teaching
and learning. These districts are home to some
of the most innovative schools in the U.S.
The program seeks to:
Create a community
Administrators, curriculum
directors, instructional coaches,
discipline leaders and teachers
within a district share expertise and
collaborate with NLP on news and
media literacy education issues.
Amplify districts’
leadership in the 昀椀eld
Educators and district leaders’
assume a central role in elevating
news and media literacy at the
national, state and local levels.
Produce lasting impact
Districts develop a sustainable and
replicable plan for implementing
news and media literacy learning
upon completion of the fellowship.
