Research
We conduct national research that
shows why news literacy matters — and
how our resources make a difference in
what students learn.
Teen survey
In 2024, we partnered with SSRS Opinion Panel to
survey 1,100 teens about how they 昀椀nd, use and
think about information. The results show a clear
and urgent need for news literacy education.
Educator survey
Show that news literacy
deserves a place in every
school by providing strong
evidence — original research,
consistent student learning
results and credible, highquality curriculum. To build trust
and clarity around this work,
we’re expanding outreach to
parents, guardians, librarians
and community educators.
We’re developing a national survey that will
explore how teachers and librarians see the need
for news literacy — and what helps or hinders
them from teaching it.
NLP’s 2024 teen survey
shows teens need and
want news literacy education.
94% of teens say that schools should
be required to teach media literacy.
But only 39% say their classes
included any media literacy instruction
during the 2023-24 school year.
83% get news from social media
platforms like YouTube, TikTok or
Instagram.
80% report seeing social media posts
that spread or promote conspiracy
theories —and 81% of those are inclined
to believe at least one.
